Peggy Oki at the Port Townsend Skate Park

The Jefferson County Historical Society has long collected the Oral Histories of many of its residents. With the help and expertise of PTTV, JCHS is entering the 21st Century and is now adding video to its archives and is producing programs of interviews with county residents.

The Northwest Maritime Center approached JCHS about documenting the return of one of Port Townsend’s favorite boats back to its home port. Jim Daubenberger and Glenn Abraham taught hundreds of folks to sail in PT bay in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

Both owned what many consider to be the quintessential Northwest boat – the Thunderbird, an affordable, able boat. Their Thunderbirds were sold as they moved on to larger craft and eventually they lost track of them.

The NWMC received the donation of Island Passage, a Thunderbird, last year to use in their program. Joe Daubenberger, Jim’s son, recognized the sail number as that of Glenn’s old boat – Caveat- as it was sailing in PT bay, 35 years later and once again teaching folks to sail. The NWMC will be renaming the boat Caveat in a ceremony at the Wooden Boat Festival this summer.

JCHS is using this extraordinary story as a springboard to add to its collection of the maritime history of our area, and to produce programs with PTTV that make those stories come alive.
